Curiouser & Curiouser Tutoring Responsive Website & Mobile App

Coursera's UX Design Certificate supplied prompts to choose from when building a responsive website and mobile app for our third and final project. I chose the prompt, "A mobile app and responsive website that enables tutors to list their services and parents to search for and book time with tutors. "

I wanted to create an app and responsive website that included tutors, parents, and students. I wanted to ensure students could also have access to communicating with their tutors online and that students over 18 could find and pay for their tutors. I conducted user research and created user personas to reflect that.

 User Persona | Sitemap

The Sitemap followed a mostly hierarchical model with sequential models for account applications and payment methods. Through my competitive audit, I found that having a concise and accessible-friendly user experience is key. This led me to create an app and responsive website reflecting that.

For the screen size variations, I wanted to include an iPad, an iPhone, and an Android alongside the desktop responsive design. With tutoring, users tend to work on multiple device sizes. It was important to me that my design worked logically & visually. I wanted the user to have a familiar experience regardless of which device they had.

During the digital build for the app, I realized it was more important to showcase accreditations instead of subjects. I took the original tutor spotlight design and turned it into one tutor per carousel scroll to give the tutors more importance and balance out the homepage design. For the responsive website, images showcasing both the company and the tutors take up the homepage giving the company a means to play more with what they want to include in the design and giving the user an enjoyable and useful experience.

My usability study found that relying on the logo to be the home button was not helpful to users and they requested a more obvious button which I easily remedied by adding a home button to the website menu. I also needed to add both a tutor search and booking option on both the website and mobile app. Finally, I created a personalized logo for the company using Canva.

I wanted to elevate my design with this project. With any design, there is always room for improvement. I would like to expand my designs to include a general search option and pages dedicated to each grade-level subject available. I would also like to continue my accessible-friendly build to meet all user needs in the future. This project taught me that you can both elevate your design and keep the user forefront at the same time.
